Recycle of barium titanate

【background】

Barium titanate has a high dielectric constant, and are used as multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCC), PTCR thermistors and so on. The downsizing and high-performing of cellular phone and personal computer was results of barium titanate. There is, however, no effective utilization of used barium titanate. Therefore it is solidiyed with cements and was disposed in land. In the meantime, titania is widely utilezed as paint, food additives, cosmetics and photocatalyst materials. Titania can be obtained by proper treatment of barium titanate. It is also expected that barium can be covered as barium carbonate in the recycling process.

【objective and contents】

The research objective is to study effective utilization of used barium titanate.(Fig. 1) Titania was obtained by acid leaching of barium titanate. The resulting titania was characterized and its photocatalytic performance was investigated.

【results】

Titania (rutile) obtaied by leaching of barium titanate had a high specific surface area (max was 181 m2/g), and was fine rod-like particles extended to c axis.
